Driving Drunk

One of the fun things about working here is the completely liberal views of drinking in the workplace. It’s not like we get drunk every day, but alcohol is not a stranger here.
For example, a vendor sent over a bottle of really nice champagne as a Christmas gift. First of all, that would NEVER happen [...]

A short list of a few of the things I will miss when I leave Germany

A list today.

Sauerkraut - I realize this is readily available in the U.S. and not a delicacy. However, I will miss the FREQUENCY of sauerkraut. I’ve eaten some for breakfast three days straight. In the U.S., that would be a crime.
Small cars - and small roads and fast Autobahns. On our first trip back to [...]

If I leave here tomorrow

Along with that crazy ass schedule for the rest of this year, it’s started to really hit home that as of May 6 my visa expires an I will no longer be allowed to live in this country. It’s kind of offensive, really. I want to say to Germany, “What do you mean, you don’t [...]

What is wrong with me??

(That is a rhetorical question.)
Lately we’ve been getting a little sad about leaving Germany, so we’ve stepped up our travel plans a bit to make sure we aren’t missing out on anything. Which seems like a good idea in theory.
But now as I look over the next few weeks, I’m going into mild panic mode. [...]

Rock Around the Clock

Well, Germany’s new legislature is in session and they’ve immediately jumped to the most critical, pressing issues facing society. They’re trying to eliminate the changing of the clocks and keep daylight savings time all year ’round. Personally, I prefer the summer time and I think most other people do as well.

I came, I saw, I drank some beer.

(Total tangent: who says “I came” unless you’re talking about sex? I mean, shouldn’t it be “I went”? “I came to Oktoberfest” sounds so stupid. Julius Caesar, why did you have to have such a dumb quote? I really went back and forth whether I should call this “I went, I saw, I drank some [...]

PBR Me ASAP

Germany is famous for a few things: concentration camps, grumpy people, bratwurst, and beer. I’ve experienced the grumpy people and beer part the most.
I’m no beer connoisseur; I’m more of the “does it have alcohol in it? Ok, I’ll take it.” type. But ask Travis what he misses most about the U.S.?
PBR.
Not just some of [...]

420

This is officially ridiculous.
Today we leave for our FIFTH trip to Amsterdam this year. That’s right, in seven months, we’ve gone to the town five times.
And no, to answer the question you’re thinking, I am not a smoker.
Everyone that comes here wants to go to Amsterdam. First it was our best friends in January. Then, [...]

Why didn’t someone warn me about that?

Thank GOD it is Friday. And thank GOD I have an awesome husband who not only LETS me drink large amounts of the best rum ever, but also joins me and shares an identical hangover the next day.
Tonight we’re going out for drinking and bier gardens and really good German food from one of our [...]

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

But these 48 pictures are more than words. If ever you’ve doubted how important our country is in this world, take a look.
Not a SINGLE day goes by without hearing Obama’s name on the radio. Every time we’re overheard speaking English, someone pops up and says “USA? Obama? Congratulations!” It’s such an extraordinary feeling, [...]
