This Blows

I’ve gone through over 300 Kleenex since Friday. This tally does not include the random other things I’ve used to blow my nose, such as paper towels, toilet paper, napkins, and even a random piece of paper when I was desperate. That puts my tally up even higher.
But for a number we can quantify, 300. [...]

Help Wanted

Next weekend we’re meeting Travis’ brother and wife in Paris for a quick visit. His brother’s wife sent me an e-mail asking if there was anything I wanted from the U.S. Since Taco Bell might lose some of its luster in transit, I decided I’d ask for more books. I brought 20 books with me [...]

I’m not complaining, but…

Oh wait. I am.
Totally. Fucking. Bitching.
Fifteen days ago I woke up with a sore throat. FIFTEEN. I am still not well.
The symptoms have been all over - sore throat, swollen glands, black lung cough, puking, achy. Now, here I am coughing and blowing out green gunk every 45 seconds.
It’s grand. Really.
I am not sold on [...]

Story Time

There once were two Americans living in Germany. The Americans struggled with a lot of things that should have been simple, but overall liked it all anyway. One weekend, the Americans decided to celebrate summer. They, being car-less, took the bus down the hill to the market and splurged on a large case of beers.
The [...]

Sick Day (and days and days)

I went to the doctor yesterday and she gave me a note excusing me from work until Monday. I kind of laughed and said to myself “Ha, I’ll be back by Wednesday.” But when I told my co-workers my deviant plans to break the rules, they said absolutely not. Apparently it is some kind of [...]

I want my mommy!

The whole time Travis was sick, I kept thinking “I wish I could take a little of that to make him feel better.”
What was I thinking?
It started Wednesday with a slightly sore throat. I persevered. Thursday, add a cough to that sore throat. By Friday, we could mix in aches and pains, runny noses, and [...]

Double Take

My beloved hometown, known by many only for it’s various smells (usually not so good smells, unless it’s Cap’n Crunchberry day at the General Mills plant) finds itself underwater as I write this. The place I worked that one summer in high school? Water is now rising to the third story of the five-story building. [...]

German Margaritas

Nicht so gut.
Same with the food. But it was a good anniversary anyway.
On another note, one thing I’m learning here is that there are a lot of laws. Like, lots and lots. For example, last week I was planning to do some work on the weekend. I mentioned this to a co-worker and she told [...]

Hasn’t quite sunk in yet…

Even though we’ve been here, like, FOREVER now, it still hasn’t sunk in that I’m living in Europe. It is really not all that different, other than
a) there’s no air conditioning. Anywhere. (They think it’s unhealthy. I think it’s unhealthy to live in these HOT conditions. And unhealthy to smell the B.O. of people I [...]

Wish I’d found this place BEFORE the gallbladder surgery

We’re looking for a place to spend our anniversary and we’ve decided to head to the Bavarian Alps to see a lake and some castles and blah blah. Yes, our anniversary which is NEXT WEEKEND. Nothing like advance planning.
So, I’m on Priceline.co.uk looking at descriptions of hotels in this teeny tiny town we have our [...]
